Skills Assessment Overview

Obtaining a skills assessment is a mandatory requirement for many visa subclass (189, 190, 491, 186 Direct Entry). The assessing body is determined by the occupation. The skills assessing bodies visa applicants most commonly interact with are Vetassess, TRA, ACS, CPA, and ANMAC.

The requirements for a successful skills assessment will depend on the skills assessing body. Some require relevant work experience in addition to relevant qualification, some require only a suitable qualification, while others may allow significant employment experience in place of relevant qualifications.

Skills assessing bodies can be rigid both in their eligibility criteria and document requirements. Disputes between applicants and assessing bodies are common, often leading to appeals.

Some assessing bodies offer priority processing pathways, while other may have processing times taking multiple months. Prospective visa applicants should therefore apply as early as possible so as not to run out of time to submit a visa application before the skills assessment is complete. Skills assessment typically last 3 years from the date of assessment, so it is rare for an assessment to be completed too early.
