Overview
Becoming a Standard Business Sponsor (‘SBS’) is the first step in a business being able to sponsor workers on temporary Subclass 482 work visas. From the date of approval, the SBS will be able to sponsor workers for a period of 5 years.
It is important for businesses to understand that being a sponsor comes with a range of obligations, aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the subclass 482 visa program. Some of these are:
Notify the Department when certain events occur, such as changes to business details or cessation of sponsored workers employment with the business
Ensure sponsored workers only work in the occupation they were sponsored for
Ensure pay of sponsored workers is consistent with information provided to the Department in the application, and pay remains no less than what an Australian would be paid for the position
Cooperate with inspectors in case the Department audits the business to ensure compliance with sponsorship obligations
For businesses interested in becoming an SBS, it is important to first discuss this with a qualified professional to ensure the SBS status will allow sponsorship of the staff the business wants to sponsor. While becoming an SBS is an essential first step in the process of sponsoring workers, there are many other requirements that must be met for employees to get to the point of holding a Subclass 482 visa.
