Parent Visa Overview
There are many different types of parent visas. Broadly, these can be categorised as contributory (expensive but ‘quicker’), non-contributory (cheaper but slower), onshore and offshore. The most suitable parent visa option for your parents will primarily be determined by budget, visa processing times and age of parents.
Common requirements across parent visa categories are:
At least half of the children are Australian permanent residents or citizens and are ‘settled’ in Australia
Have an Australian citizen or permanent resident child to be a sponsor able to support you for 2 years of living in Australia
Meet health and character requirements
For many applicants, access to Medicare is a key consideration. Holders of permanent visas are eligible to enrol in Medicare, but given extensive processing times, applicants should discuss with a qualified professional whether it is possible to access Medicare during visa processing.
A further key consideration is whether applicants will be granted a Bridging Visa if applying from within Australia. Currently, Bridging Visas are restricted to aged contributory parent visa applicants only. This visa category requires the primary applicant to be no younger than 67.
